Colorado Moose Hunting 2024

Available Colorado Moose Hunts --- Search HF Aventures

Moose numbers in Colorado continue to trend up, making them a real bright spot for Colorado. Over the last two decades, the population has exploded, while neighboring states have struggled to maintain numbers and had significant decreases in some units, resulting in less permits issued in those states and more moose hunters looking to Colorado for that coveted Shiras tag. The trickle effect of this will likely be more applicants and tougher draw odds in the future. With moose numbers continuing to increase, more and more non-resident hunting opportunities are popping up all the time. This is largely due to a combination of sound management strategies, prime habitat, and hunter conservation/support. Even with all the positive things happening for moose in Colorado, it may be derailed by the forced introduction of wolves into the state this past December. With more wolves on the way from the good old state of Oregon, only time will tell what kind of negative effect these large predators will have on this blossoming moose herd. The saddest part of this is that all the hard work that has gone into getting the moose to where they are today may all go down the drain in a short period of time. For now, though, Colorado is the definite go-to state for Shiras moose.

Colorado currently has 12 data analysis units statewide with huntable moose populations. Every single one of them is capable of producing 40"+ bulls, with some that will push the 50" mark each season. Most of these units are higher elevation mountainous basins with big riparian willow and aspen stands in the bottom of the canyons, (a.k.a. ideal moose habitat). Pay attention to the unit comments to figure out which units have the type of terrain that will suit your hunting style. Breaking down and hauling a moose out for miles from above 10,000' can be an overwhelming task for hunters who are not prepared for it.

Colorado Moose Season & Dates

In 2024, the state is planning to issue 637 total permits, with 59 of those going to nonresidents. The permits were split between 25 bulls and 34 cows. Successful bull moose applicants have the luxury of hunting all three seasons with their permit. Colorado offers three weapon choices (archery, muzzleloader, and rifle) with varied season dates associated with them. Dates for 2024 are as follows: archery season September 7-30, muzzleloader season September 14-22, and rifle season October 1-14. Successful cow moose applicants are limited to hunting in one season.

Colorado Moose Draw

If Colorado’s moose hunting has a downside, it’s the cost. Since the 2019 price increases, it is now one of the more expensive states to apply for when it comes to out-of-pocket costs, but it is well worth it. If you elect to build a point if unsuccessful in the draw, it will cost you $100. In the end, if you’re looking for a trophy class bull or just the chance to hunt Shiras moose, Colorado is a must-apply-for state.
