HUNT DETAILS:
One of the most iconic and sought-after species in western big game, the Rocky Mountain Elk isn’t typically associated with Texas. However, after being wiped out in the early 1900s, elk have made a successful return to the rugged mountains of West Texas, offering hunters a unique opportunity to pursue free-range bulls in the Lone Star State. This outfitter has exclusive access to some of the best elk habitat in Texas—areas known for both high elk density and exceptional trophy quality.
Most hunts take place during the peak of the rut in September and October, when bugling and calling are highly effective and often lead to close-range encounters. Late-season hunts in November and December are also available. Elk on these ranches are carefully managed to reduce hunting pressure, making mature bulls more responsive to calls and increasing chances of success.
Although the terrain is rocky and covered with thorny vegetation, elevations range from 3,000 to 5,000 feet—much lower than typical western elk country. Combined with well-maintained infrastructure and large private ranches, this makes the hunts more accessible for hunters of various skill levels and physical abilities.
These fully guided, all-inclusive hunts span 4 days (½ day on arrival, 3 full days of hunting, and ½ day on departure). They are primarily conducted 1×1, but 2×1 hunts can be arranged if needed. Expect high-desert conditions, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and plenty of natural hazards. Bulls scoring 300"+ are common, and each season produces bulls exceeding 330".
